Why is our society becoming obese?

The human body is supposed to walk or run, and eat the requisite amount of the calories. If we don't need the energy for those activities, the fat is stored. Our lives have become more comfortable and our work is less physical, more people are inactive and packing on the pound.
What should I keep in mind so that I don't eat more than necessary?
Dinner: When it's a social evening meal, it's harder not to overeat. Pay extra attention to what you eat at hte end of the day. And, don't in front of the TV.
Liquids: The body doesn't register liquid calories as fully so drink juice and alcohol sparingly. Better; Tea and water.
Friends: Eat slowly with long pause (put your cutlery down). Lean back, listen to your dinner partner's conversation and take your time.
Variety: You eat about 60 percent more from a varied menu. The perfect buffet strategy: Take a small plate, try a bit of everything, eat slowly, and let 15 minutes elapses between buffet trips. If you're still hungry, get seconds but only from the best items.
